Ageism Is Alive and Kicking In More Ways Than One
This however, is no joke. The equation is this:
We are all living longer + we have to stay
healthy by being active +
pensions are not enough + more and more
need to keep working =
older people need jobs
The problem is someone forgot to tell the
employers!
People as young as late 50s are not getting
the work that they are highly qualified and experienced for. Ageism is here.
The frustration for older workers is
enormous. They continually work for less
money and take anything they are offered.
We are in danger of exploiting our older work force and they’re considered
the lucky ones who can find a job.
Yes of course we have to employ young
blood, but we also need maturity, stability, loyalty, expertise and
experience. And we especially need
people who can build excellent relationships with our customers and
clients. This is the profile of the
older employee.
Are bosses frightened of employing people
older than them with more experience? Do
they really think they may be shown up if they hire someone who is more
qualified and experienced for the job?
Do younger bosses think they won’t be able to control older employees?
If the answer is yes to one or more of
these questions then the said boss is very short sighted indeed. By employing a strong mature worker to the
team, the boss will shine. How incredibly
stupid of some to only hire weak people just to make them look good. It doesn’t work that way. Bosses need to bury their insecurities and
embrace age diversity with all its richness.
All age groups are valuable. So
come on employers, get with the times and hire people for their value and
contribution.
